Import Compliance: What Egypt Requires

Egypt is a documentation-first market. These are the steps in the order they must be completed.

1. Importer eligibility and GOEIC registrationThe importer of record should be registered with the General Organization for Export and Import Control, with commercial registration and tax records that correspond to vehicle importing. Because Egypt also applies restrictions to private individual imports, the importing entity should be confirmed before the vehicle is purchased, not afterwards.
2. ACID number and CargoX document handlingThe advance cargo information declaration is obtained by the Egyptian importer and must be secured before shipment. On the China side, the export documents are uploaded through the designated electronic platform and matched against the declaration. This is the step where mismatched or late documents most often cause a shipment to be held.
3. Type approval and conformity documentationVehicles must demonstrate compliance with Egyptian standards covering safety, emissions and equipment. Documentation is reviewed and the conformity position established ahead of arrival, because incomplete files attract additional review at the port.
4. Customs clearance and releaseClearance runs against the bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and the conformity file, with duty and VAT assessed on the declared value. Egypt applies one of the heavier tax structures on vehicles in the region, banded by engine capacity, so the landed cost calculation matters as much as the FOB price.
5. Registration and platingAfter release the vehicle is registered locally. Keep the clearance paperwork together, because registration requires the originals.

How Egypt Import Duty Works

We quote FOB or CIF. Egyptian assessment happens at destination on the declared value, and the structure is banded by engine capacity.

Vehicle age and eligibility

Egypt treats new, used, electric and hybrid vehicles under different rules, and it does not apply one universal age threshold across all categories. Private individual imports are also subject to separate restrictions. We therefore confirm eligibility by VIN, production date, powertrain and importer identity before quoting, rather than applying a single rule of thumb. Send us the models and years you are considering and we will confirm the position in writing first.

3. Confirm and pay a depositVehicles are reserved and the pre-shipment inspection is scheduled. The deposit and balance schedule is set out in your proforma invoice.
4. Pre-shipment inspectionPhotographs and video of the actual units before loading, sent to you for approval.
5. Balance, loading and departureDocuments are couriered to you so your bank and agent can complete the destination formalities.
