Why Chile Dealers Buy Chinese Vehicles

Supply origin in this market has shifted decisively toward China over the past few years. Here is what that means for a dealer or importer sourcing stock.

A single national homologation gate

Chile requires vehicles to pass homologation covering both safety and emissions before they can be registered. It is a defined national process with a defined file, and we prepare the documentation package so the vehicle clears it without repeat visits.

Euro-aligned emissions

Chilean emissions requirements track the European framework rather than a separate national standard. Our catalogue vehicles are European-homologated platforms, which aligns with what the certification body expects to see.

Iquique and the free zone

Iquique operates as a free trade zone and functions as a redistribution base for northern Chile and the neighbouring markets. For distributors covering more than one country, that changes the economics of the entry point.

A developed EV market

Chile has one of the more developed electric vehicle markets in the region and a national electrification strategy behind it. That makes new-energy models commercially realistic rather than a speculative line.

Import Compliance: What Chile Requires

Chile is orderly but gated. These are the steps in the order they occur.

  1. Homologation file preparationThe homologation process requires technical documentation including the certificate of origin, technical specifications and the emissions certificate. We assemble the China-side file so the submission is complete when it is lodged rather than returned for missing items.
  2. Inspection and certification on arrivalThe vehicle is physically inspected and certified against Chilean safety and emissions requirements. The certification is a prerequisite for registration, and a temporary circulation document issued at clearance is valid for a limited period, so homologation has to be completed inside that window.
  3. Shipping and customs clearanceClearance runs against the bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and insurance documents, with duty and VAT assessed on the CIF value. Chilean preferential treatment applies to Chinese-origin goods under the bilateral agreement, and we confirm the applicable rate for your HS code in the quotation.
  4. Registration with the civil registryOnce homologation is certified, the vehicle is registered and plated. Registration draws on the clearance file and the homologation certificate, so the originals should be kept together.

The step that matters most: The risk in Chile is the homologation window. The temporary circulation document issued at clearance is valid for a limited period, and if homologation is not completed inside it the vehicle cannot be permanently registered. We build the timeline backwards from arrival so the inspection is booked before the clock starts rather than after.

Documents we provide

DocumentWhat it is forWhen
Proforma InvoiceBasis of the import declaration and the letter of creditBefore deposit
Certificate of ConformityEnables destination clearance and registrationBefore sailing
Bill of LadingTitle document for the delivery order3–5 days after departure
Commercial InvoiceCustoms valuation and duty assessmentBefore departure
Packing ListPort inspection and VIN verificationBefore departure
Certificate of OriginCustoms and preferential-duty complianceOn B/L issuance

On document accuracy: destination customs systems cross-check every character across the invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of conformity. We verify all of them against each other before the original bill of lading is printed.

Ports and Shipping to Chile

Chile has Pacific gateways serving different parts of the country, plus a free zone in the north.

GatewayTypical useNotes
San AntonioPrincipal central gatewayServes Santiago and the central valley
ValparaisoCentral coast gatewayThe alternative for central region distribution
IquiqueNorthern free trade zoneRedistribution base for northern Chile and neighbouring markets

Entry point is a commercial decision. Iquique operates under a free zone regime and suits distributors covering more than one country, while San Antonio and Valparaiso suit domestic distribution. Tell us where the vehicles are going and we plan the entry point around it.

Container loading. A 40HQ carries three to four SUVs or four to five sedans depending on dimensions, and mixed model loads are routine for dealers testing a new line.

How Chile Import Duty Works

We quote FOB or CIF. Chilean assessment happens at destination on the CIF value, in the structure below.

ComponentApplies to
Customs dutyCIF value, at the preferential rate applicable to Chinese origin where confirmed
Value added taxCIF value plus duty
Customs service and storage chargesPer declaration
Homologation and inspection costsPer vehicle, paid locally

Why there is no total percentage here: We do not publish a combined percentage. Chile applies a low baseline duty and preferential treatment to Chinese-origin goods under the bilateral agreement, but the applicable rate depends on the tariff classification and it changes. Your proforma invoice sets out the structure for your vehicles, and we recommend confirming the final calculation with a licensed Chilean customs broker before you commit.

Vehicle age and eligibility

Chile applies age and category conditions to imported vehicles, and the published guidance on the exact thresholds varies between sources. Rather than quote a figure that may not apply to your case, we confirm eligibility against the specific VIN manufacturing year and vehicle category before any commitment. Tell us the models and years you are considering and we will confirm the position in writing first.

Chile Import FAQ

What homologation does Chile require for imported vehicles?
Chile requires vehicles to pass homologation covering safety and emissions before registration, carried out through the national certification process. A temporary circulation document issued at clearance is valid for a limited period, and if homologation is not completed inside that window the vehicle cannot be permanently registered.
How old can an imported vehicle be for Chile?
Chile applies age and category conditions to imported vehicles, and published guidance on the exact thresholds varies between sources. Rather than quote a figure that may not apply, we confirm eligibility against the specific VIN manufacturing year and vehicle category before any commitment.
Should I ship into Iquique or San Antonio?
Iquique operates under a free zone regime and suits distributors covering more than one country, while San Antonio and Valparaiso suit domestic distribution into the central valley. The right entry point is a commercial decision, so tell us where the vehicles are going and we plan around it.
Is left-hand drive required in Chile?
Yes. Chile drives on the right, so only left-hand drive vehicles are quoted for this market. The steering configuration is confirmed in writing before your deposit is taken.
How long does shipping from China to Chile take?
Pacific transit is a matter of weeks depending on the service and the rotation, and clearance plus homologation adds further time after arrival. Your quotation carries a realistic door-to-door estimate rather than ocean transit alone.
What is the minimum order quantity?
Volume wholesale terms apply for dealers and distributors, and single-unit orders can be quoted FOB on request. Send your model mix and destination port and we will confirm terms for your specific order.
How many cars fit in one container?
A 40HQ container typically holds three to four SUVs or four to five sedans depending on dimensions. Mixed model loads are routine for dealers testing a new line, and we return a loading plan with the quote.
How do I start an order?
Send your model list, quantities, target model years and destination port through the contact form or WhatsApp. Our export team replies within one business day with pricing, a plan and lead time.
Do you supply used vehicles as well as new ones?
Tell us the model, year and quantity you are looking for. We will confirm what is available, along with the age eligibility for the destination rules currently in force, before any commitment is made.
