Import Compliance: What Algeria Requires
Algeria is an approval-led market. These are the steps in the order they occur.
- Importer eligibility and pre-import approvalAlgerian import rules require approval before a vehicle is shipped, and the importing entity must be in a position to complete the process and settle through the banking system. This is the first gate, and nothing should be booked before it is cleared.
- Certificate of conformityA certificate of conformity confirming the vehicle meets Algerian technical and emissions requirements must be obtained. Because Algerian standards track the European framework, vehicles with a European homologation base are the most straightforward to certify.
- Shipping and customs declarationThe consignment moves to the nominated Algerian port, where the declaration is filed against the bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and conformity documentation. Duty and VAT are assessed on the declared value at this stage.
- Technical inspection and registrationAfter release, the vehicle passes a technical inspection at an approved centre and is then registered locally. The inspection is a genuine gate rather than a formality, so the vehicle has to arrive in the condition it was certified in.
The step that matters most: The most common and most expensive mistake in this market is booking freight before the import approval and conformity route are confirmed. We do not push for a booking until the paperwork path is established, because a vehicle that cannot obtain its certificate is a stranded vehicle.

Algeria restricts the age of vehicles that may be imported, and the rule has been revised more than once in recent years.
